1. Download these apps before leaving home—These are the apps we primarily used while vacationing in Cancun, Mexico. All these are available in your app store FOR FREE (except Netflix and Airalo).
2. Print off ALL your travel information and take it with you!! Having a physical copy of your travel documents is always a great idea, especially if you need to reference them and either don't have cell service or quickly show proof of purchase for your room type to your hotel! Also, I always tell my clients to snap a picture of their passport & attach it to an email to themselves (better to be safe than sorry)!
3. Getting through customs when you arrive in Cancun - Before the summer of 2022, visitors to Mexico were required to fill out an identification form and present it to the customs officers before being allowed to exit the airport. This is no longer the process, for they have gotten rid of the paper forms. Now, all you have to do is either present your passport to a customs officer or to an e-gate. BE WARNED (read the quick tip)!!
Whether you're interested in a Cruise, guided tour, group trip, independent international travel or just a weekend get-away, and even that bucket list adventure... we can assist you with that!

4. If your resort doesn't offer airport transport, book it before arriving in Cancun, Mexico. Trust me when I say this is worth doing BEFORE you leave home. We booked ours on Orbitz, or you can try Expedia (click 'cars', then 'Airport Transportation'). Generally, these are the BEST prices online! And since you are looking at reserving transportation, you can also look at things to do in Cancun on Orbitz!
5. Grab a taxi and make a friend—there is no shortage of taxis in the area, especially if you are in the hotel zone!
6. Hop on the local bus if you do not want to pay a little extra for a taxi, MULTIPLE local buses run up and down the hotel zone and all over Cancun, and it's like 10 pesos, aka SUPER CHEAP (that's about .50 cents US).
7. Get outside of your resort! Ok, I say this with caution. You are in a foreign country, and there are still sketchy areas in Cancun (like anywhere in the world), so use your best judgment. I wouldn't suggest walking too far at night (or at all), but it's not that big of a deal during the day! Nate and I walked all over the place while staying in the hotel zone! I'm not sure about the rest of Mexico, but a good rule of thumb is to go with a group of people or at least two people, not by yourself & be aware of your surroundings.
8. Bring tip money to Cancun - Is using pesos or dollars in Cancun better? In our honest opinion, do what you prefer! The most crucial part is knowing the exchange rate, if you plan to utilize USD! Here are a few more tips you might appreciate knowing:
9. Don't fall for the 'FREEBIES' - If and when leave your resort on foot, especially in the hotel zone (DURING THE DAY), don't fall for the FREE excursion tickets in return for attending a timeshare presentation.... trust us.... the free excursion tickets are NOT worth it 🥴🤦♀️ (yes, we fell for it and lost a whole day... but in hindsight, we did get to experience Hotel Xcaret - WATCH THAT HERE or READ about it HERE)
10. If you want to buy your own hard liquor (now I'm about to sound like a lush 🤷♀️)
11. DO NOT DRINK THE FOUNTAIN WATER (THIS ALSO MEANS ICE) - Stick to bottled water only or take THIS filtered water bottle with you! Mexico does NOT have the proper filtration like the USA (or your country), which will make you sick. Luckily 99% of the resorts in Mexico will supply bottled water for you. Oh! And be sure to ask for extra water bottles first thing when you arrive to your resort & again when they clean your room or in the morning.
12. Departing Cancun - When you are headed back home and departing Cancun, I'm not going to lie, traffic can be incredibly chaotic and long checkin lines at the airport are typical! With saying that, here are a few tips, to hopefully help make your departure a little smoother:
foratThe infamous Visitax & what to expect when leaving Cancun - If you stayed in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico (Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Tulum Playa del Carmen, etc.), then you will be subject to pay the 'Visitax', prior to passing through security . If you follow any of the Cancun focused Facebook pages (we follow this one and this one), this is a hot topic that there is a lot of confusion around. Let me clear this up for you and quickly summarize this! This is a new tourist tax created in 2021 (not to be confused with the other taxes/fees that are charged within your airline ticket or the fee you get charged at your hotel), that all foreigners, aged 4 and up, will have to pay the $17 fee (per person & yes this fluctuates), prior to departing Cancun. Now... here's where the confusion lies. Some travelers say they paid, some didn't, some got stopped and asked for proof of payment while others were not stopped. As of now, the verification is RANDOM, and not being enforced on a regular basis. What we are telling our traveling clients: we give our clients both sides of the story & let them decide if they want to pay it or not. There are two ways to pay, online (do NOT pay on random websites, you can and WILL be scammed) or with the representative (rep will be in a maroon colored vest) verifying your passport, prior to clearing security. We personally chose to arrive t the airport and pay in person vs online. Full disclosure, we did not get stopped, and I did not see any Visitax signs or QR codes to pay it. Caution to you, if you choose to do the same, this could create a delay when going thru secuirty & enforcement could change in the future (there is no telling at this point).
Trust us, the higher coverage, the better... especially in Cancun!!
Sun Bum has the BEST smell, does NOT give you that 'burning' sensation, is water-resistant up to 80 minutes, and most importantly, OCEAN & REEF FRIENDLY! Before leaving Cancun, we noticed a deeper tan with the higher SPF coverage vs the lower!
Not sure if it's just a me thing, but somehow, something ALWAYS happens to the ONE pair of sunglasses that I bring... and then I end up buying a pair that I don't really like that much... tell me I'm not alone here that this happens too?! Don't let your accessories make your vacation to Cancun, a negative one! We LOVE these sunglasses from Knockaround, especially for THE PRICE!!
If you DON'T have a waterproof camera on your Cancun trip... we need to have a serious talk! The GoPro 11 is our MAIN camera for everything, even our YouTube videos. Giving you 4K videos, amazing photos, incredible stabilization, & it's super compact!
Call me a germaphobe, but the idea of utilizing a snorkel set from the resort or a tour, that multiple other people have used... nah, I'm good! THIS ONE can get tight enough for my small head and larger enough for our son's (bigger) head & of course these water fins are the perfect size for your carry-on!
GOGGLE FOG TIP: Take a lighter to the inside of your goggles and lightly burn the glass. There is a thin layer of plastic, and this is what creates bad fog in your goggles. Burning the thin layer will help keep your goggles from fogging immediately
When you get to Cancun, exploring can be fun, but be sure to take your 'small' essentials with you in a small backpack of some sort! And if you are going ANYWHERE there will be water, take a small dry bag or large dry-pack backpack instead! There is nothing worse than wanting to take your cell phone, other electronics, & a pair of clothes & try to keep them dry!!
If you didn't know, YOU SHOULD NOT DRINK THE WATER IN MEXICO! You WILL get sick and let me tell you, I learned this the very first time I visited Mexico, when I was 19. Never Again!
Thankfully, we discovered THIS water bottle made by Water To Go that actually has one of the best water filter inserts inside the bottle itself! Its like having a lifestraw, but with a water bottle to complete it!
We each only brought 4 of these guys on this Cancun trip! Living in Florida, we are out on the ocean & beach as much a possible and because of that, we now incorporate these SPF/UPF Shirts every vacation and beach trip that we go on. Nate & Blake's SPF preference (men's), and my SPF preference (woman's)
I know this sounds like an odd one, but these were the BEST random items that we brought with us. You never know what to expect when you are ready to eat & drink in a different country! These charcoal pills & these Alka Seltzer EXTRA STRENGTH pills were a MASSIVE lifesaver... especially on the day, I decided to over-indulge in the Tequila. Oh, and throwing in a Pedialite will save your life too!
The charcoal should be taken an hour before eating and the Alka Seltzer pretty much as soon as you start to have a stomach ache.
I can't tell you how many times this portable solar charger has been a HUGE lifesaver, especially because we are NOT always conveniently sitting next to an electrical outlet. Make sure to give it a good wall charge prior to using for best results!
'I want to stay inside for an hour to charge my phone while on vacation in Cancun'...
SAID NO ONE EVER!
And this one is pretty rugged, so if it gets a little wet or dusty because you are out exploring, no big deal!
