San francisco TRAVEL Guide: Tips fOR YOUR CALIFORNIA VISIT

MUST KNOW TRAVEL INFORMATION FOR SAN FRANCISCO

Let's start with a few quick travel tips about San Francisco that we think you should know before your visit!

Navigating San Francisco: San Francisco offers a variety of transportation options to suit every visitor's needs. Remember that there are toll bridges surrounding San Francisco, so if you rent a car, be sure to have tolls as an option on your rental! Here are some tips and insights to help you get around the City by the Bay efficiently and enjoyably:

  • Explore on Foot: San Francisco is known for its walkable neighborhoods & hot spots like Fishermans Wharf, Golden Gate Park, and Mission District. Exploring on foot allows you to discover hidden gems and enjoy the city's vibrant streetscapes. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, dress appropriately for weather conditions, & be prepared to potentially walk up and down some of the most steep streets in all of California

  • Cable Cars and Streetcars: A must-do experience, not just for novelty but also for practical transit between key areas & getting up and down the steep hills of San Francisco. You can choose from three cable car lines - two start at Powell and Market and continue to the Fisherman's Wharf area; one starts at California and Market and continues to Van Ness Avenue. Click here to get more public transit information & to purchase tickets.

  • BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit): BART trains are ideal for longer distances, plus they can take you to and from both the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK). This is a great way to avoid sitting in the horrendous traffic.Click here to get more BART details.

  • Rideshare Apps: Uber and Lyft are widely available and can be convenient, especially late at night when public transport is less frequent.

  • Biking Around: This is a great way to experience San Francisco California; once again, you won't have to deal with traffic. On a side note, depending on where you want to explore, be prepared for climbing steep streets and hills. Here are some great ideas & pricing for renting bikes.

  • Ferries and Sailboat Cruises are another way to experience San Francisco, but they are a bit more scenic than exploring inside the city. This is a great way to travel, especially to destinations like Sausalito, Tiburon, or Alcatraz Island, plus this gives you unique views of the city skyline & Golden Gate Bridge.

  • Parking Insights: Another tip if you are planning to rent a car & take it into San Francisco; parking can be a bit of a nightmare. If you are in the downtown areas or Fishermans Wharf, be prepared to pay a hefty parking fee! Also, if you are looking for overnight parking, find a gated & guarded parking garage. Yes, you will pay a hefty parking fee, but you are less likely to get your vehicle broken into! We have discovered if we are staying overnight, most hotels charge upwards of $50 per night per vehicle. We found the parking garage at Waterfront Plaza (off Francisco Street) offered a nighlty parking of $27 & it was a secured locking gate from 7pm to 6am, so no one could enter or exit during those hours. Also, be mindful of street cleaning schedules to avoid tickets & confirm you can park overnight without getting towed!

Weather In San Francisco

San Francisco is famous for its distinctive microclimates, leading to different weather conditions over short distances. Influenced significantly by the cool currents of the Pacific Ocean, the city enjoys a generally mild climate throughout the year. Here is what the weather is like in San Francisco California by season:

  • Winter (December - February): Winters are mild with occasional rain, but rarely cold by North American standards. It's the wettest season, so waterproof gear is essential.
  • Spring (March - May): Spring sees the city gradually warming up, with more sunny days and occasional rain showers, leading to beautiful blooms across the city parks & rolling hills.
  • Summer (June - August): Contrary to many expectations, summer in San Francisco can be quite cool, especially in the evenings. The famous fog, affectionately known as "Karl the Fog," rolls in, dropping temperatures.
  • Fall (September - November): Often considered the best time to visit, fall offers warmer temperatures and less fog, making it ideal for exploring the city.

San Francisco Packing List

San Francisco's weather can be unpredictable, but understanding the seasonal changes and packing accordingly will ensure you're comfortable during your visit. Here is a quick list what what to pack for your San Francisco vacation!

Summer Packing List

  • Layered Clothing: Despite being summer, it can be chilly, especially in the mornings and evenings. With that being said, we do suggest you pack your summer clothes as well (for obvious reasons), just be sure to take a light jacket with you during the day, just in case!
  • Light Jacket or Windbreaker: Essential for the unpredictable weather and cool breezes.
  • Comfortable Walking Shoes: For exploring the city's hilly terrain.
  • Sunscreen & sunglasses: The sun can be strong during the day, even through the fog, so be sure you have a little protection for your skin & eyes!

Fall Packing List

  • Warm Layers: Temperatures can vary, so packing items you can layer will serve you well.
  • Scarf and Light Gloves: For cooler mornings and evenings.
  • Sunglasses: You'll enjoy many sunny days during this season.
  • Comfortable Footwear: Ideal for walking and taking advantage of the best weather.

Winter Packing List

  • Waterproof Jacket: To stay dry during the rainy days.
  • Umbrella: A compact one can be handy for unexpected showers.
  • Warm Hat and Gloves: For those chillier days.
  • Boots or : Waterproof if possible, for walking in the rain.

Spring Packing List

  • Light Scarf and Layers: The weather can swing from cool to warm.
  • Water-resistant Jacket: For those spring showers.
  • Comfortable Shoes: For enjoying the city as it starts to bloom.
  • Camera: Spring brings beautiful flowers and greenery worth capturing.

Discover San Francisco California: Top Attractions and Hidden Gems

What To Do In San Francisco

San Francisco is a blend of famous landmarks and secret spots with incredible views, each showing its unique charm. From the Golden Gate Bridge to Alcatraz and beyond, there's much to explore. Here are some top picks and local recommendations that we believe will give you an authentic experience of San Francisco California!

Top Things To Do In San Francisco California

  • Golden Gate Bridge: No visit is complete without seeing this engineering marvel! Although walking across the bridge is a must, you need to see it from afar to get the whole feel and spectrum of the bridge. For the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge, add these locations to your list: Fort Point National Historic Site, Crissy Field, Presidio Tunnel Tops, Battery Marcus Miller, Top Of Four Vista Points, Point Bonita Lighthouse (check hours here), Kirby Cove, and Battery Spencer.

  • Alcatraz Island: Take a tour and discover the history of this former federal prison by taking a ferry across the bay. Make sure to book your tickets in advance, especially if you're visiting during peak seasons (June - August and major holidays). Also, dress in layers and wear comfortable shoes! Due to its location, the weather tends to be a bit cooler than the mainland.

  • Fisherman’s Wharf: Enjoy fresh seafood, street performers, and the sea lions at Pier 39 (the sea lions are most active during late summer and fall) . It’s a bustling hub of activity and entertainment, ergo we suggest you start here early in the morning to beat the crowds, especially during peak season (June - August), significant holidays & weekends! Also, before you book a cruise or activity, be sure to check here & here for potential discounted prices!

  • Chinatown: Explore one of the oldest and largest Chinatowns in the USA. Be prepared for authentic cuisine, tea shops, and unique architecture through multiple streets. The best time to visit is during Chinese New Year for that true authentic Chinatown feel. Do a quick Google search to double-check dates and be prepared for large crowds! And once again, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and clothing!

  • Golden Gate Park: One of our absolute favorites in San Francisco, is exploring Golden Gate Park! I kid you not, we could spend at least two days exploring the 1000 plus acre park & still feel like we haven't experienced all of what it offers! We suggest taking a look at the park's website before you start your adventure & pinpoint where you want to 'begin'. If you are on a time crunch, but would like to see majority of the park on your own time, we suggest renting bikes or even taking a guided Segway tour (arrange at the park). This way you can go at your own pace & see specific locations you are more interested in. There is also a FREE shuttle (Golden Gate Park Shuttle) that runs 7 days a week, until 6pm, serving all of the park. Be sure to check the schedule here for changes in hours & specific routes.

  • Explore the city: There is much much more to experience than the major locations I listed above. For instance, one of our all time favorite spots to check out, is Coit Tower. This is back a few blocks from the hustle and bustle of Fisherman's Wharf, but the views from this lookout are absolutely outstanding! A few other locations that we love to explore, are: Lands End Trail, Legion Of Honor Art Museum (there is also  an incredibly beautiful golf course in this area), and the Sutro Baths.
