When you hear the words of the captain yell
"JUMP NOW! JUMP JUMP JUMP"
You suddenly realize you are placing yourself in the open ocean, next to multiple massive 41,000 lb Whale Sharks, while they're eating their lunch... tiny Plankton
- OMG -
...Talk about an incredible rush of all your fears, excitement, a bit of anxiety, and an adrenaline boost happen all at the same time.
WHAT. A. RUSH.
Now that I have mentally (and possibly physically) prepared you for the big JUMP, I wanted to explain what you can expect before this if you decide to book with Ocean Tours as we did (jump to what's included ⬇⬇⬇)
Whether you're interested in a cruise, guided tour, group trip, independent international travel, or just a weekend getaway, and even that bucket list adventure (like swimming with Whale Sharks)... we can assist you with that!
Click 'Lets Go!' & let's start this adventure together!
When planning your Whale Shark adventure in Cancun, booking with a reputable and experienced tour operator is essential! I can't stress this enough!
We counted at least five boats that did not prepare the tourists with two very specific items necessary for this excursion: shade and water fins!
Fortunately, we did our homework and ensured we had all the necessities for the trip, ultimately leading us to choose Ocean Tours via Viator!
Here's what is included on your Whale Shark excursion when you book with Ocean Tours:
QUICK TIP: There are NO toilets on the boat, so be sure to use the facilities at the dock area!
QUICK TIP: I would bring a few granola bars and maybe some jerky if you don't like those options. At the end of the tour, we worked up an appetite and were turning into Hangry Karens... don't become a Hangry Karen... bring something to munch on!
QUICK TIP: Even though they supply the fins & masks, we suggest taking your own. The risk of getting the wrong size fins and snorkel set or using someone else's mask is highly possible! These water fins fit excellent in a carry-on & are adjustable to fit all 3 of our feet sizes 7 to 11, and this snorkel mask also adjustable to fit my tiny head, to my son's big head.
QUICK TIP: I would HIGHLY recommend you bring your own waterproof camera! We brought 2 with us! Nate had the GoPro Hero 7 & I had the GoPro Hero 8 . Trust me, you WILL want this camera for your tour! See the video for yourself
No matter which swimming with Whale Sharks tour you decide upon in Cancun Mexico (we recommend Ocean Tours), we learned we were missing a few important things, and we don't want you to do the same. Here's our list of items... some we took & others we wish we would have taken!
QUICK TIP: There is VERY little shade while on the boat, so if you find yourself sitting in a spot that is fully exposed to the sun, cover your self with a towel... just trust me on this one!
QUICK TIP: Make sure the charger is fully charged via wall charge for best results.... works like a charm, especially when you are needing juice for your camera to capture this amazing trip!
‼ THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF INFORMATION ‼
I'll be honest; we had no clue swimming with Whale Sharks in Cancun was even an option... in fact, we were initially looking at vacationing to Roatan to swim with the Whale Sharks, but due to covid, they were not allowing International travelers.. so Mexico it was!
When we were on our excursion with Ocean Tours Mexico, our guide, Tlal (aka David... aka the best guide ever), was informing us that the Whale Sharks are somewhat of a 'mystery' when it comes to where they disappear, once the 'feeding frenzy' ends, and where the heck they go when they have their offspring.
Whale Shark season in Cancun Mexico starts around mid-May thru late September, and Tlal told us that the BEST time to swim with the Whale Sharks is July & August. He also told us to keep in mind that nature and this big beautiful fish (technically not a mammal) are simply unpredictable, and that's why they suggest the best time of year to swim with these Whale Sharks is in the 'middle' of the 'season.'
So if this is the ONLY reason you are visiting the Cancun area, AIM FOR JULY & AUGUST as your travel dates!
QUICK TIP: If possible, choose a day that shows LITTLE TO NO WIND in the forecast. The specific area to 'search' your weather would be Isla Mujeres, Isla Holbox, or Isla Contoy. It sounds odd, but the wind can make or break your trip to see the Whale Sharks. We are on the ocean A LOT, and from experience (we talk about this when visiting Alligator Reef), the wind is a game changer when doing ANY water activities!
